Urgency at IUFRO Congress, Largest Gathering of Forest Researchers Ever
Agroforestry World Cathy Watson The 24th Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) started with a bang on 6 October in Salt Lake City, Utah, as keynote speaker Robert Bonnie laid out graphic statistics on the impact of climate change on American forests. The USDA Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment said that 47 million acres are being laid to waste by bark beetles and that the fire season is an astounding 60-80 days longer than it was in the past. IUFRO 2014 World Congress
Annals of Forest Science The Congress title is “Sustaining Forests, Sustaining People: The Role of Research” The Conference is the largest global scientific conference on forests with an expected number of more than 3,500 participants from all over the world. It will be held from 5-11 October in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The program will reflect diverse contributions from the forest science community across the full range of natural and social science disciplines.

The Salt Lake Tribune In the same year that Brigham Young began to develop Salt Lake City in the Territory of Deseret based on Mormon principles, another group of pioneers in Europe began to manage forests based on scientific principles. In 1873, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) was founded in Vienna, Austria. Since then, IUFRO has provided a forum for researchers to share the best available science on forests by conducting an International Congress every four years. Read More
Forest Research Congress Plants 4 Trees as a Gift to Salt Lake City
The Salt Lake Tribune Kai McArthur, 11, of Hawaii, joins Gerhard Mannsberger, left, chief of the Austria Forest Service, and Niels-Elers Koch, president of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), during a tree planting ceremony Sunday at the International Peace Gardens in Salt Lake City. The IUFRO 24th World Congress kicked off Sunday and began with the planting of four trees as a gift to the host city. The group planted a cedar of Lebanon, a pinyon pine, an American chestnut and a European beech at the peace gardens. Read More
